When we entered Liz Braun’s office a week ago and announced the start of our sit-in, we demanded a real response, a real apology, and real action. Since then, Liz Braun, Nathan Miller, and Beth Pitts have made it clear that they do not intend to give us these things. We will continue to push those administrators to apologize and resign. We have work to do, and we will continue this work without Nathan Miller, Beth Pitts, or Liz Braun, especially since they have failed to show up work for the past week . Therefore we have decided that we will be inviting them to move out, while we move up — specifically, upstairs to work with President Smith and other administrators on implementing the unmet demands.
Before we invite them to move out, we want to give a closing message to the administration: we have transformed these places to spaces of community, we do not accept these administrators as our leadership, and we will continue to push Swarthmore College to answer to us. We’re inviting you all — everyone who has participated in the sit-in, or supported it from afar, or feels moved to join us now — to be a part of this final sit-in action.
May 9, 2018 at 12:00 pm, join us for this important action where we will announce our closing to the administration. After assembling in Parrish and outside on Magill walk, we will respond to the administrators’ glaring absence, announce our closure to the whole community, and make a final show of our collective commitment.
We will display our signs (which we need your help making!) We will redecorate Parrish, demonstrating that we have reclaimed this space which belongs to us as students. If you would like to participate please come at 11:30am to pick up signs.
If you want to help us “redecorate” the offices with our messages to the deans, let us know and we will make a groupchat of folks who are going to be doing that work in the morning leading up to the noon action.
This action and your participation in it are integral to sending the College our message. We must show them that we are united, we are ready for change, and we will hold them accountable for their actions, not only now, but in future.
If you are able to, come and participate!
